A
A previous event (usually viral) precipitates the symptoms- usually 1-3 weeks before the appearance of s/s

A
GBS does not affect LOC and cognitive function
Awake, alert -brain is functioning

diagnostic management
A
Presenting s/s- upward progression of motor weakness
Ascending weakness – look at legs (young guys usually)
- Worst is if it reaches diaphragm
- hx of viral illness

nursing implication for motor weakness progression
A
ex: weakness below knee– radiates to thigh– immediately inform physician could be ascending weakness

management
A
- There is a possibility of rapid progression- medical emergency!
- Assess muscle strength and Respiratory function
- Mechanical ventilation
- TPE (therapeutic plasma exchange; old name: plasmapheresis) and IVIG – both can decrease the circulating antibodies- immunoglobulin
- Symptomatic treatment- oxygen, chest physical therapy, share responsibly (call respiratory therapist/physical therapist)
- Recover is weeks to years
