ipsilateral
same side (usually from the neck up [the face] left facial droop left facial weakness) → could be left sided stroke
contralateral
neck down (left brain stroke= right sided weakness or paralysis= opposite) → most common in strokes
dysphagia
trouble swallowing– biggest problem is aspiration pneumonia
dysarthria
Difficulty forming and pronouncing words
slurring of the speech (can still talk)
aphasia
inability to comprehend or formulate a language– can be mild to severe
expressive aphasia
inability to express oneself
receptive aphasia
inability to understand language
global aphasia
mixed most severe
apraxia
Inability to perform previously learned action
sometimes patient makes verbal substitution of the desired word
homonymous hemianopsia
blindness in half of the visual field on one or both eyes
ex: either right halves of both eyes or 1 eye
unilateral neglect
Loss of awareness of the side affected by stroke
may ”forget” that these parts exist!
frontal lobe damage
problem with learning, memory and other intellectual functions
comprehension, increased forgetfulness, issue with motivation (lack of)
