What does the combination of benzodiazepines and EtOH do?
CNS depression (have synergistic effect)
half life of diazepam? does it have active metabolites?
> 100 hours; yes has active metabolites
half life of alprazolam? does it have active metabolites?
12-15 hours; insignificant
black box warning for alprazolam
dependence and withdrawal reactions, including seizures
Active metabolite of diazepam? terminal elimination half life?
N-desmethyldiazepam; 1/2 life is >100 hours
Special use of diazepam (valium)
symptomatic relief in acute EtOH withdrawal
