Behavioral Therapies (Schmidt) Flashcards
classical conditioning definition
- learning is the association of things that take place together in time
- usually elicits an involuntary response
extinction
discontinuation of reinforcement (positive or negative) eventually eliminates behavior. Can occur in classical or operant conditioning.
generalization
when other similar stimuli/situation also becomes the conditioned stimulus for the conditioned response
behavioral therapy for phobia
feared stimulus + relaxation –> decreased anxiety
examples of relaxation activities
meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, hypnosis
systematic desensitization
- make hierarchy of fears
- gradually introduce feared objects while using relaxation techniques until there is less anxiety
- work way up the hierarchy
operant conditioning
- learning is the association of things that take place sequentially
- usually elicits voluntary response
reinforcement (in operant conditioning)
results in increased behavior
punishment (in operant conditioning)
results in decreased behavior
positive (in operant conditioning)
something is added
negative (in operant conditioning)
something is taken away
positive reinforcement (in operant conditioning)
application of good consequence when behavior is performed
positive punishment (in operant conditioning)
application of aversive consequence when behavior is performed **does not have to be painful
negative reinforcement (in operant conditioning)
removal of aversive stimuli when behavior is performed
negative punishment (in operant conditioning)
removal of good consequence when behavior is performed
