Section 8 - Radar Flashcards
What are the limits of LARS and when is it normally provided?
All aircraft outside CAS
upto and including FL100
Within 30nm of ATS unit
Unless a unit is H24;
Winter: 0800-1700
Summer: 0700-1600
Not W/E’s or PH’s
What is a TRA?
Defined volume of airspace under the jurisdiction of one aviation authority, but temporarily reserved by another authority for use.
What is autonomous radar status?
In addition to ATCC’s, certain units are authorised to provide ATS within Controlled Airspce
What is traffic Information between ATS personnel?
controllers pass TI to determine if coordination is necessary
TI should be in accordance with CAP 413.
TI is obsolete once passed.
TI is not coordination.
Not above, not below, maintaining should be used.
What is Coordination
2 or more parties vested with the authority to make executive decisions appropriate to the task.
Qualified controllers agree course of action based on known information.
Responsibility for implementing and maintaining rests with one of the parties.
What are the approved forms of Traffic Coordination?
Tactical Coordination
Tactical Coordination - not yet on frequency
Tactical Coordination by proxy
Standing agreement coordination
What are the CAS A and D deeming conventions using SSR mode C?
Mode C outside CAS, contacts can merge provided the A is not permitted to penetrate CAS and 1000’ exists.
Caution. It to erode against traffic subsequently crossing a lower portion of CAS.
Aircraft at or above FL110 squawking 700,7001,7002 without C can be deemed outside CAS and contacts can merge.
Inside CAS when should standard separation be provided against unknown traffic?
Known or suspected that A/C is: Lost or experienced radio failure Inadvertently penetrated CAS Not squawking Squawking 0000 Joining CAS
When are formations considered as a single unit for separation purposes?
Co-level and within 1nm lat and long for Mil or 0.5nm for Civ.
Mil and Civ mix: 1nm co-level.
Civil formation on Mil tasking: 1nm co-level.
Within Class G limitations increased to 3nm and/or 1000ft.
Formation is operating under an ACN
How are ATS provided to formations outside CAS?
Within 1nm visually or by radar:
Lead a/c squawks (last a/c if greater than 3nm)
FIS to lead a/c only
Controllers identify stream on handover, TI and coordination.
What are the rules governing radar handovers
Satisfactory 2-way comms Controller to controller Overlapping radar coverage Clear of conflicting Satisfies Standing agreements
In what order is information given during a radar handover?
Console number. Nature of task. Position, heading. Level. Type of A/C Other info (ATS/RVSM)
What is the procedure for descending and aircraft low level?
Area unit: Set RPS and clear a/c to ASA
Terminal: Pass QFE and clear a/c to RVC
What are the controllers actions and responsibilities on being advised that a pilot is manoeuvring in accordance with a TCAS RA?
Controllers cease to provide instructions until pilot reports ‘clear of conflict’.
Controller resumes responsibility for separation when:
Pilot reports resuming ATC clearance or
Pilot reports resuming ATC clearance and acknowledges an alternative clearance.
Controllers should not pass TI to a/c on RA
Controller ceases to be responsible for separation between the A/C.
TI may be justified (non-mode C or carriage of transponders not mandatory)
Under what circumstances is a controller to transmit MA and CF procedures to a pilot?
Visiting aircraft where appropriate.
When requested by the pilot.
Procedure has temporarily changed.
When instructed to do so.
