What is meant by Duty of care
ATS task in uncontrolled airspace it is not possible to be totally prescriptive about all actions with regard to unknown traffic, and passing of advice and warnings on high risk conflictions.
controllers are to use professional judgement to determine the best cause of action for a specific situation.
What are the rules regarding self medication?
Controllers should not take any medicine or drugs before controlling unless prescribed or approved by a MAME.
Controllers should not use over the counter medicines within 24hrs unless approved. dietary, homeopathic and alternative medicines should be avoided.
What are the restrictions on controlling following routine vaccinations?
only resume controlling after 12 hrs.
What are the restrictions on blood donation?
only give blood if not scheduled to control 12 hrs immediately following.
What are the limits regarding alcohol consumption?
Controllers will commit an offence if alcohol in breath, blood or urine exceeds relevant limit when performing, purporting to perform or might be reasonably expected to perform such a duty.
¼ UK national drink drive limit and no alcohol in the 10hrs prior.
What are the definitions of SHALL and SHOULD?
Shall = executive verb. Regulated person has no choice but to do what is stated
Should = permissive verb. Allows regulated entity to consider alternative approaches but must be approved by the MAA.
What are the rules regarding fitness to control?
Controllers should seek medical advice as they have a duty to ensure safety of themselves & air systems under their control.
If advice comes from non-aviation doc, a mame is to be contacted prior to returning to work.
Report if unfit to control to supervisor
Controllers may declare unfit to control without seeing an MO. When they do see an MO & are declared unfit to control, if a review is required the controller is to ensure that such a review is obtained.

SDH: Senior Duty Holder
CNS(1SL) personally legally responsible and accountable for end-to-end aviation SMS is resources, obtained & implemented.
ODH: Appointed by CNS. ACNS(a&c) is the Navy Cmd ODH & personally responsible & accountable for the airworthiness, maintenance & safe use of AS in his AoR
DDH: Appointed by CNS, SQEP DDH’s are responsible for airworthiness, maintenance & air systems in their AoR. Accountable to ODH, they are SME’s on their AoR.
For how long is a CofC valid?
3 yrs or until the holder leaves the station, whichever is earlier.
