SOG 28-01, Carbon Monoxide Detector Activation
What is the procedure
A
- If rescue or removal of persons from the building is necessary or anytime CO is suspected to be present, ensure all personnel entering the building are wearing appropriate protective clothing and are equipped with SCBA and initiate rescue operations immediately.
- Initiate emergency patient care if there are people requiring assistance and the Ambulance is not on the scene.
- Ventilate the building to reduce any possible CO.
- Examine the detector for indication of false activation.
- Use information obtained from the building occupants to complete the Hazard Checklist as completely as possible. The Officer in charge will forward the Hazard Checklist to Fire Prevention.
- Leave the Carbon Monoxide Homeowner Checklist with the occupant.

A
- Car running in attached garage.
- Operating barbecue in an enclosed area such as a garage.
- Gas or wood burning fireplace.
- Blocked chimney opening.
- Portable heater.
- Improperly installed kitchen range or cook-top vent.
- Corroded or disconnected water heater vent pipe.
- Cracked heat exchanger in furnace.
- Leaking chimney pipe or flue
