Section 4 Flashcards
what are the cognitive factors that affect reaction time and movement
- anticipation
- attention
- anxiety
- hicks law
- psychologically refractory period
what is multitasking and how does it affect movement?
when 2 task are performed at the same time
- if they both require the same amount of attention, then performance diminishes in both
what is a dual task paradigm
it is when there is a primary task and secondary task
- primary task is usually motor related
- secondary task can be continuous or discrete
how do interpret the results of the dual task paradigm
look at the moments of graphs when tracking is poor and it is usually due to more attention to motor task after being perturbed
what is anticipation and the types?
being prepared for what and when the stimulus is
- effector anticipation
- temporal anticipation
explain how anticipation occurs when someone is about to walk on an slippery terrain instead of an stable one
it changes the way someone moves in their current situation
when someone knowingly walks on a slippery surface, they decrease the angle of their footing and use less force compared to someone unknowingly walking on a slippery surface.
explain effector anticipation
a person figuring out how long it takes to motor plan and perform their on movement
explain temporal anticipation
the ability to anticipate when a stimulus will occur is dependant on
- foreperiod regularity: knowing the duration between each stimulus
- for period duration: too short of a duration leads to increased reaction time and too long leads to increased reaction time or decreased reaction time depending whether the catch trial is present (withholding the stimulus)
what is attention?
the information processing capacity
gaze and attention usually go hand and hand
how does arousal and anxiety affect reaction time?
performance is best at optimal amount of arousal and some anxiety as it makes you pay more attention to you actions
what are the 3 stages of central processing?
- stimulus identification
- response selection
- response programming
what is hicks law?
the relation between choice reaction time and the number of stimulus-response alternatives
what does hicks law show?
that increasing the amount of SR alternates increases choice reaction time but in a smaller amount
