Section 2 - Local Separation Standards Flashcards
What VFR clearances may be given by Luton ATC without reference to TC Luton?
What squawk and level restriction will these departures be given?
- VFR clearances via the South/North lane.
2. Squawk 4677, not above altitude 1500ft
Immediately after a VFR South/North lane departure, what should the AIR controller do?
Inform TC Luton:
“(C/S) VFR departure North/South lane.”
What is the phraseology for VFR departures leaving the CTR?
“(C/S) clear of controlled airspace, ATC service is terminated, squawk 7000 and free-call en-route.”
AIR is only permitted to limit aircraft performing a missed approach to alt 2000ft during emergencies. Why is this restriction in place?
(2)
- Most aircraft struggle to capture 2000ft.
2. May have to fly manually, risking a level bust.
Is AIR obliged to ‘work’ transit flights?
No!
Can TC Luton ask AIR ‘work’ IFR transit flights?
No!
If AIR notes the details of a VFR crosser on scrap paper, is this sufficient for them to ‘work’ the traffic across the aerodrome?
No. FDE required for VFR crossers being worked by AIR.
During coordination for transit aircraft, what is the most important piece of information AIR should find out?
Flight rules.
While the Dunstable gliding airspace is active, are non-NPR IFR aircraft permitted to route through?
No!
If a VFR departure does not have a transponder, what information should be passed to TC Luton?
Airborne time.
What must Luton ATC do for VFR departures NOT using the South-North lane?
Pre-note and get release from TC Luton.
How wide are the South/North lane?
Describe the route of each lane.
Both 1.5nm
South Lane = M1J8 -> Hyde -> Runway mid-point
North Lane = Pirton -> Offley -> Runway mid-point
For SVFR aircraft routing by the North/South lane, what level and conditions would they be given?
Not above 1500ft altitude.
Clear of cloud with surface in sight.
Who is responsible for separation for SVFR aircraft during entry/exit from South/North lanes?
Pilots are responsible.
Traffic information is to be given as requested/necessary by ATC.
What separation can be provided to SVFR aircraft in the vicinity of the aerodrome? (Not Luton specific separation)
(3)
- In the vicinity, if adequate separation can be provided by AIR when each aircraft is continuously visible to controller.
- In the vicinity, if each aircraft is continuously visible to the pilots of the other aircraft, and the pilots report they can maintain their own separation.
- In the vicinity, when one aircraft is following another if the pilot of the succeeding aircraft reports he has the other in sight and can maintain own separation.
What deemed separation is there for SVFR aircraft in the vicinity of Luton airport?
(3)
- Between SVFR flights only, operating wholly within the North or South lane.
- Between SVFR flights and IFR arrivals established on final. Provided SVFR operating wholly in North lane North of Offley, or wholly in South lane South of Hyde.
- Between SVFR flights and IFR departures from R26 tracking towards BNN or from R08 on runway heading. Provided SVFR operating wholly in North lane North of Offley, or wholly in South lane South of Hyde.
Do the deemed separations apply to traffic using the South-West or South-East departure routes?
No.
Unless TC Luton can provide radar separation, all SVFR traffic is to route via South/North lane.
Are wheeled helicopters capable of ground taxi permitted to air taxi?
No.
Helicopters able to ground taxi should be instructed to do so.
Which direction departures/arrivals can the helicopter aiming point procedure be used for?
South only.
Using the aiming point procedure, can helicopters cross the runway while traffic backtracks/lines up?
Yes. Provided traffic/aerodrome information is passed and helicopter pilot can see the aircraft.
What is the phraseology to be used for landing and departing helicopters using the “HAP”?
“(C/S), cross the runway, cleared to land at (H1/C1).”
“(C/S) at (H1/C1) cleared for take-off and cross the runway.”
Can the HAP be used at night?
Yes. Even while traffic is lined-up or backtracking.
When should the HAP NOT be used?
3
- At night, if the pilot indicates they wish to use the runway QDM and another aircraft is lining/lined up.
- For arriving IFR helicopters.
- During LVPs.
What considerations should be given for the HAP in the case of a low approach/go around or an early rotation from a departure (before C)?
Wake turbulence separation.
