What is Magnetic Tape
A reel of ribbon with tracks that each represent a bit. Store data as magnetised spots. Cheap and large capacity, Sequential. Eg. Cassettes or video tape.
What are Magnetic Disks?
Provide direct access to data stored. Capacity and access speeds of disks vary with each device.
Eg. Floppy and Hard.
What are the Characteristics of a Floppy Disk?
- Has a rigid plastic outer cover.
- Inexpensive
- Reusable
- Uses magnetised spots.
- Has a capacity of 1.44MB.
What is a Hard Disk?
Hard/Fixed disks are normally permanently installed in computer. Suitable for storing data and programs, which require large storage areas.
Types; External, Internal and Solid State.
What are the types of Optical Disks?
- Compact Disk (CD)
- Blue - ray disk
- Digital Versatile Disk (DVD)
What are the types of CDs?
- CD-ROM: Read only and made by software and music manufacturers.
- CD - R: Recordable, blank disk. Only once.
- CD - RW: Rewriteable. Record and then re-record several times.
What is Flash Memory?
A special type of EEPROM and is non-volatile.
Offers direct access and is more durable and reliable.
Eg. USB flash drive
