inflammation of the peritoneal surface without another intra abdominal process. also known as Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis.

inflammation of another intra abdominal structure or in associate with another intra abdominal disease process.
what is another name for diffuse peritonitis?
commonly referred to as “acute abdomen” and “surgical abdomen”
most common causes of acute peritonitis?
perforated appendicitis
perforated diverticulitis
pancreatitis
patient presentation of secondary peritonitis
very ill appearing
unstable vital signs (fever and tachy, hypotension in severe cases)
fetal position or supine with legs bent
do NOT want to move
may be no bowel sounds with auscultation
labs with peritonitis
cbc + diff (leukocytosis with increased neutrophils)
UA
Blood culture
HCG beta for females
radiology for peritonitis
upright x ray
abdominal CT scan
management and treatment of peritonitis
antibiotics (entrapenem 1 g IV )
two large bore IV’s
Fluids and NPO
Morphine for pain control
