COUNTERCONDITIONING

A
  • stages of SD begins with learning relaxation techniques
  • aim is to acquire a new stimulus response link eg rather than a fear response a relaxed response
  • called counterconditioning as a new association is taught to counter original one (reciprocal inhibition)

DESENSITISATION HIERARCHY

A
  • Gradual stages determined at the beginning of the therapy both work out least to most fearful
  • 1 patient taught to relax muscles 2 both construct a heirarchy (imagines scenes ) 3 gradually works through hierarchy applying relaxation 4 once mastered one can move onto the next 5 eventually mastered

  • early days clients would directly confront fears in vivo by learning to relax around them
  • more recent years imagination is used in vitro
  • research found invivo more successful Menzis and Clarke
