A
- series of case studies rather than experiment
- control group
- thieves: 44 children guidance clinic in London thieving was one of their symptoms
- 31 boys 13 girls 5-17
- graded on seriousness 1-4 grade 1 only committed one theft g4 stealing more than 3 years
- mainly average intelligence 50% 85-114 15 had higher and two below 85
- control group: similar in sec and age had emotional problems
- mothers involved

PROCEDURE
A
- oppurtunity sample each child given mental tests to asses intelligence and noted emotional attitude
- mothers interviewed by social worker and recorded psychiatric history
- both reported to bowlby and psychiatrist interviewed both child and mother
- after considers school and other reports and discussed conclusions
- many children met with psychiatrist weekly for 6 months and mother with social worker this gave detailed case history

FINDINGS
A
- found different personality types into 6 categories: normal, depressed, circular, hyperthymic, affectionless, schizoid
- they 14 classified as affection-less 12 experienced frequent separation from mother eg Betty l spent around 4 years in foster care Derek B hospitalised for 9months
- separations rare in non affevtionless in control only two
- other factors such as irritable fussy or anxious mothers

CONCLUSIONS
A
- would not be thieves if not for harmful experiences (Freuds view)
- mother and child relationship important for emotional development
- damage to this relationship effect superego
- other factors however focus on psychoanalytic factors
- implications treatment should be offered to delinquents earlier diagnosis better
