How can you treat someone with a phone addiction
Set goals to delay gratification, control impulses,
limit screen time,
more nature
What did the article recommend for future studies to look closer into? And why?
Said to look into focusing on the Orbital Frontal Cortex (OFC) - decisions - and Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex (VMPFC) - emotion - because it is the part of the brain that deals with decision making. Screen time heavily influences hot and cold decisions, thus more close attention should be drawn toward looking into the impact on the OFC
What is the I-PACE model?
The I-PACE model is a a model that identifies developing addictive behaviours
Gambling
Social media (tiktok)
Gaming (valorant)
What are the 3 main messages that explore the issues with screens from this article?
1)
Frequent + longer duration = decreased in cognitive control systems
- OFC controls decision making
- VMPFC controls emotions
- IFG motor control
- IPL self perception
-ACC general cognitive control
2)
Online rewards create short term rewards (tiktok)(opening crates)
- Decreases attention span
- Likes and Followers
- Dopamine hits from scrolling
- Adolescents are at higher risk because top-down abilities aren’t developed yet (goals, attention, decision making skills)
- Using phone to escape real problems - not able to cope in stressful situations (using phone instead of studying)
3)
WE NEED MORE RESEARCH
- More longitudinal studies
- Studying adolescents is like shooting through a moving target
- Larger sample sizes from different ages & socioeconomic status
- Can look at positive things about screens aslween
Why is the I-PACE model important when studing adolecents?
the brain is more susceptible to reward expectancies which is why adolescents can have high addictive tendancies
