defines nursing as “ the practice of nursing and includes the nursing assessments and treatments of human responses to actual or potential health problems and nursing supervision thereof”
LPN
undertakes the care of patients under the direction and in collaboration with a registered nurse or duty qualified medical practitioner or pharmacist, for custodial, convalescent, sub acutely ill and chronically ill patients, and who assists RNs in the care of acutely ill patients, rendering the services for which he or she has been trained
differences and similarities between lpn and rn
different scope of practice but they work together, lpns work under rn, rn focuses on overall health and takes on complex patient and lpn takes more predictable patients RN has autonomy
clinical guidance
provision of consultation and support from RN to LPN (RN responsibility to provide, LPN responsibility to ask) in order to provide appropriate clinical guidance they must consider:
practice setting, scope of practice of lpn, role of lpn in setting, patient population, nursing practice within the setting
assignment
the delegation of nursing care among providers in order to meet patient care needs, within scope
delegation
transferring to a component individual the authority to perform a seleced nursing task in a selected situation, the nurse remains accountable for the delegation. outside their scope.
