Morals vs Ethics
Morals are own personal standards of right/wrong
ethics are standards decided by society of what is right and wrong
Purpose of Code of Ethics
Aspirational (what were working toward)
Regulatory (monitor and regulate practice)
Provides Guidance (tells us how we should act)
Applicable wherever nurses work (not just hospitals)

Framework for Ethical Decision Making
YODA

step one: You Observe
identify the problem: name the problem clearly, where is the conflict
acknowledge feelings: what are the “gut reactions”, biases, loyalties?
Gather the facts: what are the ethically relevant? What do the institutions policies and guidelines say? What does the relevant law say?
Step Two: Deliberate
What are the goals of care, consider alternatives, examine values, evaluate alternatives
Step Three: Act
Articulate the decision, implement the plan, concluding review
