Scoliosis test 2 Flashcards
What is scoliosis?
o Appears as a lateral S or C shaped curvature
Scoliosis is defined as a curvature more than 10 degrees
How can you obtain scoliosis?
Congenital (disease that involves spinal structures and musculoskeletal conditions)
• Ex: cerebral palsy, muscle dystrophy
Idiopathic
Acquired (from injury)
What is the treatment for scoliosis?
Limit/ stop progression of the curvature
• Exercise to improve posture
• Build strength of the outside of the curvature
• Stretch for inside of the curvature
Moderate sclerosis:
• Uses Boston brace: sued to stop progression of scoliosis
Severe scoliosis requires surgery; occurs when older because hard to adjust when growing
What s/s can be found on someone with scoliosis?
Truncal asymmetry
Uneven shoulder, hip height
One side rib hump
Prominent scapula
What is juvenile arthritis?
- Inflammation of the joints and lasting more than 6 weeks
- Peaks between 1-3 years of age
- Joint swelling and deformities may occur
- Mostly idiopathic; no definitive way to find out early
What are the types of juvenile arthritis?
Oligoarthritic: one to four joints inflamed (most common)
Polyarthritis: five or more joints
Systematic: high fever that involves swelling and pain at the joints as well as a rash. This also affects internal organs
What is the treatment for juvenile arthritis?
- Treatment is supportive. There is no cure
- No specific lab tests to diagnose
- Physical therapy
- Promote healthy nutrition
Treatment: - Pain relief using NSAIDS, methotrexate (used if NSAIDS are ineffective)- monitor liver closely, and steroids to prevent inflammation
