How do you obtain cystic fibrosis?
A
autosomal recessive genetic disorder

How do you diagnose CF?
A
sweat test of 60 or more indicated a positive reading of CF
- 39 indicates it’s negative
- 40-59 needs further testing

What parts of the body are affected with CF?
A
Respiratory, GI, and reproductive

How does CF affect the Respiratory system?
A
thickened mucous obstructs the airway

How does CF affect the GI?
A
Thickened secretions obstruct bile and decrease motility
- Meconeum ileus: baby poop gets stuck in the intestines (causes: abdominal distention, steatorrhea (fatty stool), rectal prolapse, jaundice, and liver cirrhosis
- pancreas: enzyme damage (cannot absorb vitamin ADEK); causes inadequate insulin leading to failure to thrive and DM

How does CF affect reproduction?
A
low sperm count=infertility

What is the proper diet for CF patients?
A
high sodium, high protein high-fat diet
- take pancreatin before all meals to aid in digestion
- -may mix it in with acidic food like applesauce and NOT ALKALINE (dairy) because it will make enzyme not work
