Seizures Test 2 Flashcards
What are the different types of seizures?
Partial, Generalized, Complex partial
What are the types of generalized seizures?
- tonic clonic
- petit mal (childhood absence epilepsy)
- Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy
- Infant spasms (salaam seizures, west syndrome)
- Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (akinetic or atonic seizures)
What are the types of partial seizures?
- simple partial (focal)
- complex partial (psychomotor)
What are the safety precautions of seizure in order?
Maintain airway- keep suction at bedside- give 02
Turn pt to side
Nothing in mouth- watch loose teeth, suction after seizure
Side rails up, padded, guide down to floor
O2 stat, neuro after
WHat is simple partial (focal) seizure?
any age, no LOC, less 30 sec, no post confusion, no aura, motor/sensory, progress to generalized seizure
What is complex partial seizures (psychomotor)?
3yr-adolescents, consciousness impaired imm, last 30-5min, post amnesia/confusion, AURA, feeling anxiety, abdominal pain
WHat is tonic-clonic seizure?
a type of generalized seizure aka grand mal
any age, rare before 6 months, abrupt onset- 1-2 min LOC, postconfusion (min to hrs), may/not have aura, body becomes stiff and rigid when all muscles contract (tonic phase), followed by rhythmic jerking (clonic phase)
What is petit mal seizures?
a type of generalized seizures aka childhood absence epilepsy
hyperventalation 3 min, genetic predisposition/mutations, ages 4-10 yrs w/ remission in adolescence, no aura, frequent (50-100 per day)
What is Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy?
a type of generalized seizure
onset usually during puberty, no LOC, child recovers in seconds, mostly occur while falling asleep/waking up, involuntary muscle jerks of neck, shoulders and arms
What is west syndrome?
a type of generalized seizure aka infantile spasm
onset 18 mon- 4 years, severe form of epilepsy, seizures occur in clusters (5-150 per day), spasms of neck, trunk, and extremities, stops by 5 yo, occurs as infant falls asleep/ wakes up, developmental delays occur
What is atonic or akinetic seizures?
aka Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome a form of generalized seizure
onset 1-8 yo, combo of generalized seizures tonic-clonic, absence and myoclonic, drop attacks, severe behavior problems, delayed psychomotor development
