Scientific Method Flashcards
Scientific method steps
Observation of physical world, formulate a hypothesis (educated guess), experimental design, predictions, perform experiment, gather data, analyze data to see if hypothesis supported, rework hypothesis start again
Criteria for a good hypothesis
Testable and falsifiable
Control group
Independent variable is not varied/not given to this group, can involve placebo
Control Variables
Variables that stay the same across all experimental groups.
Purpose of control variables and groups
Provide a neutral base for data collection so the IV’s effect on DV is made apparent and to Isolate the IV. They also exist to reduce bias.
Placebo
Non active substance, no physical effect on participants, similar in appearance to what is being tested.
Purpose of Placebo, Blind and Double Blind
To reduce bias, isolate IV and its impacts on the experimental group
Hypothesis vs Theory
Singular testable educated guess. Theories are formed from many different hypotheses which are well researched and well supported
4 criteria for scientific study
good research design/technique w proper controls, large sample size, repeatability, publication is scientific journal + peer reviewed
3 Central Bio Theories
Gene, Cell, Germ
