Lipids Flashcards
Monomer
Lipids do not have a monomer, they are always polymers
Lipid polymer structure
Glycerol Backbone (also called Head) and fatty acid tails. Tails are bonded through non polar covalent bond
Phospholipid
Head is glycerol and phosphate, 2 fatty acid tails
Triglyceride structure
Glycerol head, 3 fatty acid tails
Why do lipids not dissolve in water?
The tails and main parts of all lipids are non polar. Due to their lack of charge makes them unattractive to water. Though there may be polar elements to some lipid molecules, it is the overall polarity of the molecule that matters
Lipid Role In Body
Protection for structures (cell membrane made of phospholipids), long term energy storage (adiposites) and heat insulation, and cell signaling (hormones are lipid based cell signaling mechanisms)
Saturated Fatty Acids and Examples
Saturated with more hydrogens, solid at room temp due to their structure, which is linear and stacks easily. EX: Lard, Butter Cheese
Unsaturated Fatty Acids and Examples
Less Hydrogen Atoms due to double bonds of carbons to each other– because the carbons are sharing Atoms with each other, they have less space to bond with Hydrogen atoms. Kinks in tails caused by double bonds. Liquid at room temp. EX: Vegetable Oils
