Science - The Sensory System Flashcards
What is a stimulus?
It is something that causes us to take action.
What does the sensory system do?
It makes us aware of the world around us.
What is a response?
It is the action we take.
Name the five sensory organs and their senses.
Eyes-Sight Tongue-Taste Ears-Hearing Nose-Smell Skin-Touch
Name the two types of neurons.
Sensory neuron - brings messages to the brain
Motor neuron - brings messages from brain to muscles and/or glands.
What are messages?
They are electrical impulses.
What is a reflex action?
It is an automatic response -eg knee jerk / blink
What is the function of the cornea?
To allow light into the eye and to protect the eye.
What is the function of the iris?
It controls the amount of light entering the eye - the coloured part.
What is the function of the pupil?
It is an opening that lets light inside the eye.
What is the function of the lens?
It focuses the light on to the retina to give a clear image.
What is the function of the ciliary muscle?
To contract and relax to change shape of the lens to look at near and far objects.
What is the function of the retina?
It contains sensory cells which detect an image.
What is the function of the optic nerve?
It carries the message to the brain.
Which way does the eye see an image?
The eye sees an image upside down on the retina but the brain interprets it the roght way up.
