Breakdown of food by chewing with teeth or mixing with stomach.

Breakdown of food by enzymes in the mouth and hydrochloric acid in stomach.
What is the function of the mouth?
Physical digestion by teeth and chemical digestion by amylase.
What is the function of the oesophagus?
Tube that passes food to stomach by peristalsis.
What is the function of the stomach?
Food is mixed with hydrochloric acid.
What is the function of the small intestine?
Chemical digestion is completed here and food is absorbed into blood.
What is the function of the liver?
Bile is produced here which breaks down fats.
What is the function of the pancreas?
Digestive juices are made here.
What is the function of the large intestine?
Water is absorbed into blood. Waste is called faeces.
What is the function of the rectum?
Faeces is stored here and passes out the anus.
What is peristalsis?
Waves of muscular contraction that push the food along the oesophagus.
What are enzymes?
Theya re chemicals made by the body that speed up reactions withiut being used up.
What enzyme does salive contain?
Amylase.
What is a substrate?
It is the substance that the enzyme acts on.
