Science - The Atom Flashcards
Name the three sub-atomic particles the atom is made up of.
Protons(p), neutrons(n) and electrons(e).
What is an atom?
It is the smallest part of an element which still has the properties of the element.
Name the charge, mass and location of each sub-atomic particle.
Proton - +1 , 1 , in nucleus
Neutron - 0 , 1, in nucleus
Electron - -1, 1/1850 , orbiting/outside nucleus
What is the smaller number on the periodic table?
The atomic number. (Number of protons and number of electrons).
What is thw bigger number on the periodic table?
The mass number.
What is the mass number?
Number of protons + number of neutrons = mass number.
Formula for number of neutrons:
Mass number - atomic number
What is a Bohr diagram
It shows the electron arrangement in rings or shells.
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different amounts of neutrons. -eg Carbon 12/13/14
