Science - General Skills (Bonus) Flashcards
Independent variable
The variable being changed (eg. the antimicrobial used)
Dependent variable
The variable being measured or observed (eg. the size of the zone of exclusion)
Controlled variable
The variable(s) deliberately kept the same (eg. the incubating conditions of the agar plates)
A control
An experimental setup with an unchanged independent variable. (eg. The disk in the middle with no antimicrobial agent)
Key elements of a graph
- Title
- Independent variable
- Dependent variable
- Each data set in a different colour
- Legend that identifies the data sets
- Units
x-axis
Independent variable
y-axis
Dependent variable
Gradient formula
Difference in y value / difference in x value = rise/run = y₂-y₁/x₂-x₁
Key components when stating safety methods

Structure of stating a hypothesis
It is predicted that (prediction) because (reason). (It is predicted that hand sanitiser with higher concentrations of alcohol will kill more bacteria as bacteria because alcohol holds properties that are harmful to bacteria.)
Structure of a conclusion
Aim (The aim was…)
Prediction/hypothesis (it was predicted that…)
Results (state the results)
ACCEPT or REJECT hypothesis (don’t say “proven” “correct” etc.)
