A description of what a substance does as it changed into one or more new substances
What are the 5 signs that a chemical change has taken place
- new colour
- precipitate forms
- heat or cold or light is produced or absorbed
- Bubbles of gas are formed
- The change is difficult to reverse
What happens in the oxygen gas test?
- The oxygen relights the splint
- When the burnt out splint gets placed into the tube of oxygen it lights back on fire because oxygen is vital for combustion
What happens in the hydrogen gas test?
- A loud pop
- When a lit splint is placed into the tube of hydrogen it creates a lout squeaky pop
What happens in the carbon dioxide gas test?
- When carbon dioxide is shaken with or bubbled through limewater the limewater turns milky (cloudy).

Why are atoms electriaclly neutral
The number of protons (positively charged) and electrons (negatively charged) are equal in an atom. Therefore the opposite charges are balanced and thus there is no net charge on the atom
