What were they: They were work camps that gave people (who road the rails in specific) jobs.
Why were they created: They were created to get the people that road the rails off the streets, and keep them away from civilians as they were starting trouble

Why were they controversial: It was controversial as they were all packed in little rooms to live and sleep, they were doing hard labour, in bad work conditions making 0.20 cents a day

- April 1935, workers in BC camp staged a walkout and demanded better working conditions and wages, they hopped on trains and hitched rides to vancouver, desiring gto take theri case to PM Bennett in ottawa.
- 1500 men gathered and began their trek to ottawa, collecting money, food and support for regular canadians on the way, who supported their cause

- 1935
- The leader Maurice Duplessis blamed the depression on the fact that many of Quebec’s industries were owned by English speaking Canadians or Americans. because of this he formed the Union national, so quebecois would have more control over their economy
- They were a force in Quebec for 22 years, they desired to protect the French language. The union national tried to stand up for a distinct, separate Quebec

- Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, 1930
- This roots in western labour and farming
- They wanted to dismantle the free market system which they saw as the cause of the depression, they desired a system of socialism (an economic system based on government control of the economy so that all people could benefit).
- The CCF called for, government ownership of banks and transportation facilities, they called for crop insurance for farmers and prevent banks from taking over farms, provincials-funded medical services for all, employment insurance and pension for seniors, large scale public works projects, set a minimum wage

- The albertan government should pay their citizens $25 each month (a social credit)
- It was thought that the depression would end if people had money to spend, thus it would be in government’s interest to give each person $25 - Tnis party appealed to those in poverty and farmers, they governed alberta and BC for many years between 1935-1992, disbanded by 1992

- He got relieved from his position after people got fed up from his attitude or lack of action towards the depression during 1930
- He took a very cautious approach to solving the issues at hand

- The 11th prime minister of canada
- He became PM in 1930 and the conservatives promised to fix the depression
- He was in power during most of the depression
- He was seen as cold or uncaring, he made the bank of canada, and public work and relief
Who is Tommy Douglas
- Member of The CCF and elected MP in 1935
- Named the Greatest Canadian by CBC in 2004
- Premier of Saskatchewan, during this time he most importantly he created Universal Free Healthcare for all of Canada
