Science Chapter 6 Flashcards
Ace Science
What is a plane mirror?
Mirror with flat surface
What is the perpendicular line to the mirror called
the normal
Describe the process of Refraction
When light travels through two different mediums, the change of speed in the mediums can cause the light to change direction
What is Refraction
The bending of light when it travels from one medium to another
What direction is the bending of light in a denser substance
It bends toward the normal line
What direction is the bending of light in a less denser substance
It bends away from the normal line
What is the range of colours that can be seen in white light called?
It is called the spectrum
What are the 7 colours on the spectrum
Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet
What do you call the act or process of splitting light into different colours
dipersion
What is triangular prism used for?
for splitting up the white light into 7 diffrent colours that can refracted through slightly different angles.
red+green=
yellow
red+blue=
magenta
blue+ green=
cyan
red+green+blue=
white
What is the function of coloured filters?
to remove colours from light
How do traffic lights use the coloured filters?
The Traffic light has 3 identical white lamps and red, yellow and green coloured filters. When the seven colours of white light arrive at the red filter, only the red light is transmitted.
What do you call the process of filtering out one colours
Subtraction of Light
Example:
If White Light is placed before a green filter and then a red filter, what will happen?
When the White Light shines, only the green light will get through, but nothing will get pass the red filter because there is no red light after the green filter anymore.
What are non-luminous object
Objects that does not emit their own light
What happens when white light shines on red and blue object
red and blue light are reflected
What happens when white light shines on a black object
No colour is reflected
What happens when white light shines on a green object
Green light is reflected
What happens when white light shines on a white object
all 7 colours are reflected
What happens when white light shines on a blue object
Blue Light is Reflected
When you have 2 cubes together, 1 is red 1 is blue. What happens when the blue light shines on both of the cube?
The blue cube appears in blue while the red cube is black
When you have 2 cubes together, 1 is red 1 is blue. What happens when the red light shines on both of the cube?
red cube appears to be red while blue cube appears to be black
What is the shape of our galaxy, the milky way?
Spiral
What are other galaxies called?
elliptical or irregular
What are galaxies made of
stellar dust,gas,stars and solar systems
How many galaxies are there in one universe?
100 billion
How big is the galaxy?
1.5 trillion times the mass of the sun
What are Asteroids made of
They are made from rock that orbit the Sun
Describe the shapes of Asteroids
Potatoes
What is the Asteroid Belt?
Asteroids that orbit the Sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter
What is the name of the largest asteroid
Ceres
Describe the structure of Ceres
Ceres has a core, a mantle and a crust. It is also covered with craters
When light falls on a smooth surface like a mirror and the light is sent back into the same medium. This process is called___
reflection of light
What does opaque mean?
Shadow when light shines, light cannot pass through it
What does transparent mean
No Shadow when light shines, light is able to pass through it
What does translucent mean
Some of the light passes through
What is the symbol for incident and reflection called
Theta
What is The symbol of Incident ray
θi
What is the symbol of reflected ray
θr
What is some example of reflections
periscope and car head light
What causes refraction
when Light waves change speed when they pass across the boundary between two substances with a different density such as air and glass. At the boundary between two transparent substances
What else can cause rainbow to form and split the sunlight
raindrops
