13
Q

What is the difference between thermosetting plastics and thermoplastics?

A

Thermosetting aren’t affected by heat and are harder to recycle, thermoplastics go soft and mouldable when heated but are easily recycled.

14
Q

List common plastics (monomer and polymer ) and their uses

A

Styrene-Polystyrene-Packaging
Carbonate-Polycarbonate-Plastic lenses

15
Q

Describe the uses of plastics and problems with plastics

A

Does not biodegrade
Hard to recycle
Can become microplastics and get in many things

16
Q

What is an alloy?

A

Combination of a metal with at least one other metal useful because they have combined properties e.g stainless steal

17
Q

what are 3 basic equations?

A
  1. metal + oxygen = metal oxide
  2. metal + base = metal salt + hydrogen gas
  3. acid + base = salt + water
18
Q

What is the symbol for nitric acid?

A

HNO3

19
Q

What is the symbol for hydrochloric acid?

A

HCL

20
Q

what is the symbol for sulfuric acid?

A

H2SO4

21
Q

What happens when metal reacts with water

A

Metals that react with water are the most reactive
These metals are stored in oil to prevent reactions with atmospheric water
These metals also react with acids
Metal + Water → Metal hydroxide + hydrogen gas

22
Q

What happens when metal reacts with oxygen

A

Rusting is a type of oxidation
Rusting is a relatively slow reaction
Other metals react much faster with oxygen such as Mg
Metal + Oxygen → Metal oxide

23
Q

What happens when metal reacts with acid

A

Metal + Acid → Metal salt + Hydrogen gas
Metals salt names are similar to neutralisation reactions
Eg. Magnesium + Sulfuric acid → Magnesium sulphate
+ hydrogen gas
