Science - 4 part 1 Flashcards
What is the difference between cells, tissues, and organs?
A groups of cells make up a tissue, a group of tissues work together to make up organs, which create organ systems
What is a cell?
what our bodies are made up of
why is oxygen needed for life processes
Oxygen helps organisms grow, reproduce, and turn food into energy
What is a tissue?
a group of cells
What is an organ system
system made up of cells and tissues
What is oxygen in cells?
This is known as diffusion. The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration
what is an organ
tissues work together to create organs
word equation for respiration
Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide and Water
describe the importance of the respiratory system
The respiratory system allows life processes to occur, providing organs with oxygen.
What is exhalation
Decrease in volume, increase in pressure. Diaphragm relaxes
What is breathing?
The physical process where we inhale air into our lungs, and exhale air out
What is inhalation?
Increase in volume, decrease in pressure. Diaphragm contract and move down.
Difference between respiration and breathing?
Respiration is a chemical process that takes place in cells to release energy. Breathing is the physical process where you inhale and exhale air in and out of your lungs.
effects of smoking on respiratory system
reduced lung function and breathlessness
Describe a some long term effects of smoking
cancer, strokes, and heart attack etc
describe the importance of the circulatory system
delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells and takes away wastes.
How do blood get in and out of the heart?
Veins carry blood to the heart, arteries carry blood away from the heart
Example of artery
aorta
Example of vein
vena cava
describe how exercise affects the rate of your heartbeat
your heart typically beats faster so that more blood gets out to your body.
difference between anaerobic and aerobic respiration
aerobic is with oxygen, and happens first anaerobic is opposite
What are the 3 types of blood vessels?
arteries, capillaries, and veins
what is a cappillary?
exchanges nutrients + oxygen with tissues e.g a single cell
What is the structure of an artery?
Blood is high pressure so small lumen and thick muscle
What is the structure of an capillary?
blood is low pressure and is single cell thick + permeable
