Schizophrenia: Non biological treatment (CBT) Flashcards
What is a therapy method used to treat mental illness’ like schizophrenia
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Describe what CBT is
Form of therapy that combines the cognitive approach and and learning thearies concepts to try and change the way a person thinks
What is the aim of CBT
Help clients identify irrational thoughts and try to change them
How does CBT challenge irrational thinking
- Therapist tries to reduce stress of a situation because people with schizophrenia tend to be more vulnerable to stress
- Therapist will build self awareness of the disease to the patient, this will help patient indentify situations which cause decomposition.
Why are schizophrenics more prone to stress
They lack necessary coping skills to manage their symptoms.
How can CBT help challenge delusions and hallucinations
By challenging the clients precieved reality using behavioural experiments.
Why are behavioural experiments used as opose to talking to them
It can be difficult to talk clients out of their beliefs as they precieve it all to be true.
Give an example of behavioural experiments being put into use
If a clients feels like people are trying to harm him, tell him to make a note everytime this happens aswell as evidence for this.
How can this evidence then be used in therapy sessions
Evidence can be challenged to help the individual differentiate between precieved reality and confirmed reality.
How can CBT treat for symptoms like ‘social withdrawl’
Every time the client puts themselves in a social environment/encounter they can be awarded with positive reinforcement.
How can this positive reinforcement help the client
Client will become more willing and confident to put himself in social situations helping reduce symptoms.
EVALUATION
EVALUATION
What is a strength of CBT for drug resisting clients
It’s a good alternative for drug resisting clients
What is evidence of this
research conducted showed drug resisting clients responded better to CBT. Hallucinations and delusions were reduced
What does that research evidence suggests
CBT is a good second line of defence for clients who don’t respond well to antipsychotics.
What is a weakness of using CBT
Evidence shows that CBT doesn’t reduce all symptoms or prevent relapse.
What was the evidence that showed this
Mckenna and Kingdon compared CBT to routine treatment and another non-biological treatment.
What were teh results McKenna and Kingdon found
CBT was only superior in 2 or the 9 trails.
What is a strength of CBT (NICE)
CBT is supported by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.
What did NICE do to find evidence for CBT
Conducted a meta analysis of high quality research on CBT
What were the results NICE fond in this meta analysis
CBT was effective in reducing rehospitalisation rates for up to 18 months for people with schizophrenia
- reduced avarage time spent in hospital (8.26 days)
- reduced symptom severity
What does this evidence show
Good evidence for the effectiveness of CBT as a treatment.
