ICD system Flashcards
When did the ICD system first appear
1893
WHat is the current version of ICD
ICD-10
How does the ICD-10 system work
- Each disorder is listed consecutively and there are 11 sections
Give an example of this
Schizophrenia, schizotypical and delusional disorder are grouped from F20 - F29
- F20 is subchategory for schizophrenia, F20.0 is paranoid chatagory and F20.1 is Hebephrenic schizohrenia
How are diagnosis made using the ICD-10
Clinician picks out key words from interview that link with the symptoms of the disorder.
Clinician then goes through alphabet index to find the disorder
Clinician then looks for more symptoms for the subchategories
What are some issues with the ICD-10 in terms of reliability
There is cultural bias with using the ICD-10
Why is there cultural bias with using the ICD-10 system
Diagnosis relies on words given by the client. This changes as presentation, communication and interpretation changes with different cultures.
What would happen as a result of this cultural bias
Different cultures might give different diagnosis because of different use of language or cultural norms.
Strength of reliability of the ICD-10 system
Improvement from ICD-9 to ICD-10
What research evidence shows this improvement of reliability between ICD9 and ICD10?
Researcher compared reliability of ICD-9 and ICD-10 by testing on about 3000 patients, over the course of a decade and a half.
What did they find
The ICD-10 positive predictive values scores for schizophrenia were 14% more in 1998 and 26.4% more in 2003 when compared to ICD-9 scores.
What is a positive of ICD-10 in terms of validity.
Mason et al has shown that the ICD-10 classification system has good predictive validity
How was this predictive validity tested?
Mason et al tried to predict people who might develop schizophrenia in the future.
What did mason et al find
That the ICD-10 system was correctly able to predict that 99 people would develop schizophrenia, as they did 13 years later.
