Schizophrenia: Drug Treatmeant (Biological treatment) Flashcards
What are the different types of generations of drugs created to treat psychosis
1st generation, 2nd generation and 3rd generation.
What is an example of a first generation drug
Chlorpromazine
What type of medication is chlopromazine, and what does it do
Dopomine antagonist, it reduces positive symptoms
How does it reduce positive symptoms
It blocks dopomine receptors in the post-synaptic neuron without activating these receptors.
What is the reported problems of using this drug
- 40% of people reported no effect of this drug
- people still experience negative symptoms
What is a side effect of this drug
- tireness
- weight gain
- constipation
- stiff and slow movement of face muscles
What is an example of a second generation drug
Clozapine
What does clozapine do
Blocks dopamine receptors in the post synaptic nueron as well as serotonin and glutamate receptors
What is a big side effect in taking this drug?
Patients can develop a fatal condition which is why this drug isnt perscribed as often.
What are the precautions of the patients that do take this drug
They must take regular blood tests to make sure they aren’t developing the condition.
What symptoms doeas clozapine target
positive and negative symptoms
Whats the reported relief rate of clozapine for treatment resistant clients who take them
60%

What is a strength of drug treatments
Research evidence from Ying Zhoa et al showed good evidence for using drug treatments
What research did Ying Zhoa undergo?
Meta-analysis of 56 randomsied controled trails comparing 18 antipsychotics. Over 10,000 people were involved
What did Ying Zhao find
17 of the 18 antipsychotics has significantly lower relapse rates than the placebo.
Why is this a strength
Shows that drug treatment is a cheaper and still effective alternative for treatment than therapy.
What is a weakness of the research done on drug treatments
Most the research conducted on antispychotics is done on animals, so you cannot generalise much of it to humans.
Why can’t you generlise animal research for humans
Although some research shows symptoms are removed, animals cannot show how side effects would interfere with everyday life
What is a strength of the application drug treatments had
De-intitutionalisation of patients with schizophrenia
What does that basically mean
Instead of schizophrenia sufferes having to spend their days in a care hospital, they could live a regular life in the community as they were now able to suppres symptoms with drugs.
