A

  • Delusions
  • Hallucinations
  • Disorganized speech
  • Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
  • Negative symptoms (flat affect, anhedonia, etc)

At least one of the symptoms must be delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech

Criterion C

A

Continuous signs of disturbance present for at least 6 months:

  • Criterion A has to be met for at least one month
  • May include periods of prodromal or residual symptoms. This might
    include:
  • Only negative symptoms
  • Attenuated (less-intense) versions of positive symptoms
  • Cognitive and/or social problems

Disorganized thought/behavior can make it difficult to carry out major acts of violence
* More likely to be victims of violence, than to commit violent acts
* More likely to be violent than general population, especially those who
abuse substances

Etiology in schizophrenia

A

Historical View: schizophrenia is caused by bad parenting ( Schizophrenogenic
mother )
* Present View: Very difficult to identify the effects of the rearing environment on schizophrenia risk

VCFS

A
  • Developmental disorder causing cleft palate, cardiovascular abnormalities,
    and learning disabilities
  • Associated with rare ~ 3 Mb deletion on 22q11(~ 30 genes)
  • 20%-30% have a psychotic disorder– schizophrenia, schizoaffective –
    accounting for as much as 1% of SZ
  • Mice deleted for this region have impaired learning and sensorimotor
    gating
