Schizophrenia Flashcards
Four symptom domains of schizophrenia
cognition, perception, emotion, and motor
Cognition
abnormal speech (form),
delusions (content),
abnormalities in executive and social behavior (alogia, dressing unconventionally, looking disheveled, erratic/compulsive behavior)
Perception
Hallucinations
emotion
flat effect & anhedonia
Motor
Catatonia
decreased motor activity
decreased engagement
excessive/peculiar motor activity
criterion A
two or more of the following symptoms:
- Delusions
- Hallucinations
- Disorganized speech
- Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
- Negative symptoms (flat affect, anhedonia, etc)
At least one of the symptoms must be delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech
Criterion B
Social/occupational dysfunction in one or more major areas
* Work
* Interpersonal Relations
* Self-care
* Failure to achieve expected level of functioning (childhood/adolescence
diagnosis)
Impairment is REQUIRED
Criterion C
Continuous signs of disturbance present for at least 6 months:
- Criterion A has to be met for at least one month
- May include periods of prodromal or residual symptoms. This might
include: - Only negative symptoms
- Attenuated (less-intense) versions of positive symptoms
- Cognitive and/or social problems
violence in schizophrenia
Disorganized thought/behavior can make it difficult to carry out major acts of violence
* More likely to be victims of violence, than to commit violent acts
* More likely to be violent than general population, especially those who
abuse substances
Schizophrenia epidemiology
one year incidence: 14
one year prevalence: 198
Lifetime prevalence: 340
Lifetime morbid risk: 860
onset is usually in teens & 20s
incidence
rate of individuals developing the disorder in a given period of
time
prevalence
rate of individuals having the disorder when assessed
Lifetime prevalence
rate of individuals who ever had the disorder at time of assessment
lifetime morbid risk
probability that an individual will develop the disorder in his/her lifetime
Etiology in schizophrenia
Historical View: schizophrenia is caused by bad parenting ( Schizophrenogenic
mother )
* Present View: Very difficult to identify the effects of the rearing environment on schizophrenia risk
schizophrenia is genetic
