What is Erythema Multiforme Major? What is the most common cause?
- Erythema multiforme rash involving at least 2 mucous membranes
- Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is the most common cause
What are the treatment options for Erythema Multiforme Major?
- Find the cause
- Anti-HSV Medications (Valtrex, Famvir, Acyclovir
- Antibiotics for Mycoplasma (Macrolides, FQ)
What is Epidermal Necrolysis? What 2 things make it up and what makes them different?
- Life-threatening
- Mainly drug induced
- Full-thickness necrosis/Detachment of the epidermis
- flaccid vesicles and blisters
-Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS)= 30% of total body surface area
What is Nikolsky’s sign?
when lateral pressure results in detachment of the epidermis
What type of blisters are associated with Bullous Pemphigoid? Why?
Firm/tense–> hard to pop with an erythematous base
epidermis is in tact
What are some causes of Bullous Pemphigoid? What is the treatment?
- Medications
- Systemic Disease
Tx:
- Oral Prednisone
- Topical ultrapotent corticosteroids
What is the most common form of drug eruption?
Exanthemous Drug Eruption
What skin condition is associated with palpable purpura? What are the causes of this?
- Leukocytoclastic Vasculitis
- Causes: Medications and infections
What is Hemoch Schonlein Purpura? What is this normally preceded by and who is normally affected?
- Small vessel vasculitis preceded by an URI (esp beta hemolytic streptococcus)
- Primarily in children, peak at 5-6 yo
- Palpable purpura most common on LE and butt
Is acute meningococcemia a medical emergency? How should it be treated?
YES!
