What can Actinic Keratosis lead to? Where are these normally found?
Squamous cell carcinoma
in older, fair-skinned people, in areas of sun- exposure
What does an Actinic Keratosis lesion look like? What is the treatment?
- Flat, scaly, rough macules or patches
- Feels like sandpaper
- Tx: cryotherapy
What is the difference between the growth of a Bowen’s disease lesion and a Keratoacanthoma?
Both are variants of SCC
Bowen’s=slow growing
Keratoacanthoma=very fast growing (4-6 weeks)
What is Erythroplasia of Queyrat? What is it associated with?
- SCC in situ of the glans penis or prepuce
- High risk HPV 16, 18, 31, 35
If you see a pink and pearly lesion, what is it?
Basal Cell Carcinoma
most common skin cancer
What will a BCC look like histologically?
oIrregular lobules of basaloid cells
oPeripheral palisading of the nuclei
oClefts between the lobules and stroma
What are the ABCDs of Malignant Melanoma?
A Asymmetry
B Borders irregular
C Color - more than one color
D Diameter (greater than 6 mm)
E Evolving – ulceration, bleeding
What type of melanoma is slow-growing, broad and flat and shows only radial growth?
Lentigo Maligna
What is the difference between Lentigo Maligna and Lentigo Maligna Melanoma?
-Lentigo Maligna is melanoma in situ and is flat
-LMN is Lentigo maligna with dermal invasion,
Vertical growth and is No longer Melanoma in situ
What skin types is Acral Lentiginous Melanoma more common in? Where are these normally found?
- More common in patients with darker skin types – Asians, Hispanics, African-Americans
- Palms, soles, subungual
What can a melanoma that is pink in the middle indicate?
Melanoma with regression
- melanoma is leading the epidermis–> can be a sign of metastasis
- poor prognosis
What type of melanoma lacks pigment and can appear red or pink?
Amelanocytic melanoma
What stain should be used to evaluate tissue for a melanoma?
