Does mucocutaneous candidiasis generally affect the scrotum?
YES. Yeasts affect the scrotum
What type of infection will present with patches and thin plaques with satellite papules?
Interigo (candida albicans colonizing the skin folds –> red, pruritic, macerated)
What is the treatment for Interigo? What is used for prevention?
- Nizoral and HC cream
- Nizoral and Desonide cream
- Zeasorb AF powder or Nystatin powder for prevention
- ZNP bar soap
Where is perleche/angular cheilitis commonly found?
commonly seen in lip lickers and in the elderly with sagging skin at oral commisures
What is chronic paronychia? What are the physical exam findings? What is the treatment?
- Candida infection of the nail
- More often in patients with diabetes or those who immerse their hands in water frequently
- Redness, swelling, tenderness of the proximal nail fold
- Retraction of the cuticle toward the proximal nail fold
-Tx: Diflucan
What has the spaghetti and meatball appearance on KOH stain? What is the treatment?
Tinea (pityriasis) versicolor
Tx:
- Diflucan or Nizoral (take 2 pills , once and then exercise after a few hours to release meds into the skin → don’t shower for 12 hours
- Nizoral cream
- Loprox cream
- Zeasorb AF powder for prevention
- ZNP bar soap
- Selenium sulfide shampoo
What is Pityrosporum folliculitis? What is the treatment?
a yeast (mallassezia fufur) within the hair follicles
tx: difulcan and nizoral (oral)
