What bug is associated with the “breakfast, lunch and dinner” pattern of bites?
Bedbugs (Cimex lectularius)
What is the only louse associated with lack of cleanliness? How is this diagnosed?
- Pediculus hemanus var. corporis
- dx: presence of nits in the lining of clothing, especially the seams
Where is Pediculosis Pubis generally found? How is it diagnosed?
- Most commonly found in the pubic and perianal areas, but can reside in the mustache, beard, axillae, eyelashes, eyebrows and scalp hair
- Diagnosis made by visual examination and by microscopic examination
If Pediculosis Pubis is suspected, what body areas should be examined?
ALL HAIRY PARTS (even eyelashes)
What are the symptoms of scabies? What is the incubation period?
- intense pruritis, which worsens at night or after a hot shower/bath
- 4-6 week incubation period
What is the treatment for Scabies?
- 2 months and older: Permethrin 5% (Elimite cream) (2 months and older)
- < 2 months or pregnant/breast feeding–> precipitated 6% Sulfur in petrolatum
- Treat all family members at the same time!
- Cover all surface area!
- Wash everything in HOT WATER and dry on high
- Antihistamines for pruritis
- Corticosteroid creams
- Antibiotic cream for excoriations
What is the treatment for Crusted scabies?
Oral Ivermectin
What is the treatment for a Black Widow (Latrodectus Mactans) bite? How long after the bite is this treatment effective?
- Antivenin
- still effective 90 hours after the bite; patient feels better within 1-2 hours
What is the hallmark sign of a Brown Recluse spider bite?
“red, white and blue” sign
–> extensive local necrosis
What is the treatment for a brown recluse bite?
- Rest, ice, elevation
- Antibiotics
- Analgesics
- Dapsone
What is the hallmark sign of Lyme disease? How is it diagnosed? What is the treatment?
- Erythema migrans
- mainly a clinical diagnosis
- tx: Doxycycline
