Intro to Derm -Connett Flashcards
What is a circumscribed, flat discoloration that may be brown, blue, red or hypo pigmented called?
Macule (primary lesion)
What is an elevated solid lesion up to 0.5 cm in diameter called? What can these form if they become confluent?
papule
If confluent==> plaque
What is a nodule? How is this different from a papule? What is a large nodule called?
a nodule is a circumscribed, elevated solid lesion > 0.5 cm in diameter
a papule is < 0.5 cm
a large nodule=tumor
*Name this skin lesion:
A circumscribed, elevated, superficial, solid lesion more than 0.5 cm in diameter, often formed by the confluence of papules. What condition is this often seen in?
Plaque
often seen in psoriasis (red scaly, well-defined, thick, circular plaques)
Name this skin lesion:
A circumscribed collection of leukocytes and free fluid that varies in size
How is this different from a vesicle?
pustule
a vesicle is a circumscribed collection of free fluid up to 0.5 cm in diameter (NO leukocytes)
How does a bulla differentiate from a vesicle?
a vesicle=< 0.5 cm
bulla=>0.5 cm
both are filled with free fluid
What is a wheal?
A transient, firm, edematous plaque resulting form the infiltration of the dermis with fluid
This is normally pink and blanchable
What are some examples of secondary lesions?
crust, scale, erosions, ulcers, fissures, atrophy, scar, Lichenification
What is the name for a collection of dried serum and cellular debris?
Crust (or scab)
What is the name for excess dead epidermal cells that are produced by abnormal keratinization and shedding?
scales
seen in psoriasis and desquamation of scarlet fever
What is an erosion? Does this lead to scarring?
A focal loss of epidermis
erosions do not penetrate below the dermoepidermal junction –> heal without scarring
What is the name of a linear loss of epidermis and dermis with sharply defined, nearly vertical walls?
Fissure
What is a depression in the skin from thinning dermis or epidermis called?
atrophy
What is a scar? What does this imply? What do these generally look like?
an abnormal formation of connective tissue
implies dermal damage
initially thick and pink but become white and atrophic
What is the name of an area of thickened epidermis induced by scratching? The skin lines are accentuated so the surface looks like a washboard?*
Lichenificaiton
What is the name for an erosion caused by scratching?
excoriation
What is a comedone?
a plug of sebaceous and keratinous material in the opening of a hair follicle
black head
What is a milia?
A small, superficial keratin cyst with no visible opening
What is a cyst?
A circumscribed lesion with a wall and a lumen
the lumen may contain fluid or solid matter
(examples: pilar cyst and epidermal cyst)
What is the name for a circumscribed deposit of blood less than 0.5 cm in diameter? Does this lesion blanch?
Petechiae
NO!
What is the difference between petechiae and purpura?
purpura is a circumscribed deposit of blood > 0.5 cm in diameter
Petechiae < 0.5 cm
What is the name for a narrow, elevated, tortuous channel produced by a parasite? What can cause this?
Burrow
Scabies!
