Scalars and Vectors Flashcards
Define Scalar.
A measurement that considers only magnitude - how much, is an amount of something.
Define Vector.
A measurement that considers magnitude and it is happening in a direction.
Scalar or Vector? Mass and Weight?
Mass = Scalar
Weight = Vector
Scalar or Vector? Distance and Displacement?
Distance = Scalar.
Displacement = Vector.
Scalar or Vector? Velocity and Speed?
Speed = Scalar.
Velocity = Vector.
Define Mass and Weight.
Mass - quantity of matter a body possesses.
Weight - force exerted on mass by gravity.
Define Distance and Displacement.
Distance - the path a body takes in moving from one place to another.
Displacement - the shortest possible path between a start and end point.
Define Speed and Velocity.
Speed = distance / time.
Velocity = displacement / time.
Define Momentum.
Amount of movement.
What is the Equation for Momentum?
Momentum = Mass x Velocity.
What is the difference between a Scalar and a Vector?
A Scalar only considers magnitude while a Vector considers magnitude and it is going in a direction.
