Q

What is the Law of Inertia?

A

A body will remain in its state of motion [whether it is still or moving] until net external forces are enough to make it change.

Q

Apply Newton’s Law of Inertia to Sport.

A

A gold ball will not move, it will remain stationary on the tee until the external forces are enough to make it move. This could be the wind blowing it, or the force of the gold club hitting it.
Once it has been hit, it will continue to move at that velocity and direction until the external forces make it change, these include gravity and air resistance.

Q

What is the Law of Acceleration?

A

The rate of change of momentum of a body is proportional to the forces causing the change and happens in the direction the force is applied.

Q

Apply Newton’s Law of Acceleration to Sport.

A

If a lot of force is applied to the golf ball aiming to the right, then the golf ball will accelerate greatly and accelerate to the right, travelling further.
If only a little force is applied too the golf ball aiming left, then the golf ball will accelerate a little amount to the left, travelling only a small distance.

Q

What s the Law of Action/Reaction?

A

For every action force, there is a reaction force of equal magnitude in the opposite direction.

One thing might move, whilst the other thing stays still.

Q

Apply Newton’s Law of Action/Reaction to Sport.

A

A player kicking a football will apply force to the ball, and the ball will apply the same force back to the foot. But the ball moves because it has little inertia to overcome, whereas a swinging leg has lots of mass and momentum, and therefore inertia, so it doesn’t bounce back off the ball.
