Sarcocystiosis Flashcards
Causes:
tenella rileyi gracilis suihominis (zoonotic) cruzi (zoonotic) Sarcosporidiosis
Sample and method
Flotation with Bresna soln- sugar, salt, ZnSO4
Diagnosis
Flotation- detection of sporocysts/sporulated oocysts in the FH!
Position of parasite
Use macrophages!! (v similar life cycle to isospora, but use macrophages)
tenella- esophagus
Morph
Large!
Cysts appear long and have a WALL!
Name and species
Wild boars- uncooked sausage
Host and Vector
FH: car and om- INTESTINAL
IH: mammals and birds- MUSCLE
Life cycle and development
Car shed sporocysts with faeces when they eat raw meat
1) endopolygeny- endothel cells
2) endodyogeny- WBC and muscle cells
3) gametogony in final host e.g when human eats sausage
4) sporogony in lumen of gut (sporulated in faeces)
Clinical signs
Cattle: Dalmeny disease
Car: no clinical signs, even if heavily infected
White cysts on muscle that may be visible with the naked eye
“Hangover symptoms” vomitting, abd pain, lethargy
Patho signs
Cattle: patechiae on organs, white spots (cysts on organs)
Necrotised cysts
Boars: both skeletal and heart muscle
Necroscopy findings via meat inspection
tenella/gigantea- esophagus in sheep
hirsuta- cattle
equicans- horse
miescheriana- merozoites inside that look like sand!!
The cystozoites are lunar shaped
