Diagnosis

A

Schizonts and merozoites in in mucous/ bloody faeces
**Unsporulated oocysts in faecal sample

Sidenote: if schizogony is more patho- symptoms before oocysts shedding (zuernii)
if gametogony more patho- symptoms simulataneouly with oocyst shedding (bovis)

Difference between bovis and zuernii (morph etc)

A

Zuernii: Many schizonts and merozoites formed- bloody stool before oocysts are excreted.
Oocysts are smaller

Bovis: Many gamonts are formed- oocysts are passed in the faeces, oocysts are bigger

Additional info

A

Almost all animals carry some Eimeria
Young/immunicompromised are usually the. most heavily infected
Sheep and goat have a lot of mixed forms in their faeces- usually asymptomatic!

Development/ Life cycle

A

1) small schizonts only
2) large schizonts= globidia
-1st gen are large
2nd gen are small

In both cases.. the schizonts then become gamonts and then oocysts in the mucosa

Oocysts are usually visible with RBC’s surrounding

Patho signs: E. bovis

A

LI: catarrhal to diptheroid enteritis
Desquamation of mm
Necrosis of ep
The globidium/macroschizonts may be visible with the naked eye

Clinical signs (usually subclinical)

A

anorexia/ fever
Bloody viscous Dx- blood and mucus are shed together
Rectal prolapse
Weight loss
