Sampling Flashcards
What is a population?
Entire group of people researcher interested in or who are interested in study
What is the target population
People from population with desired characteristics
What is the sample?
Subgroup who will take part in research
Strengths of random sampling and
Unbiased, all member of target population have equal chance of being selected - high chance of achieving representative sample
Limitations of random sampling
Takes time to make list and content all selected
What is systematic sampling
Selecting every nth person
Strengths is systematic sampling
Unbiased chance of gaining representative sample
Limitations of systematic sampling
Not truly bias or random
Strengths of opportunity sampling
Easy and inexpensive
Limitations of opportunity sampling
Bias, drawn from small part of population
What is stratified sampling
Subgroups within population each showing different characteristic, each section sampled individually
strengths of stratified sampling
More representation that other methods because there is proportional and randomly selected representation
Limitations of stratified sampling
Very time consuming to identify subgroups then randomly select and contact
Strengths of volunteer sampling
Variety of participants, may make sample more representative and less bias
Limitations of volunteer sampling
Volunteer bias
