Experimental Design Flashcards
What is experimental design
The way the 2 levels of IV are delivered
What are the 3 types of experimental design?
-Repeated measured design
-independent groups design
-Matched pairs design
Describe the repeated measures design
All participants receive all levels of IV
Describe the independent groups design
Participants in separate groups each group does one level of IV
Describe the matched pairs design
2 groups of participants but match participants on key characteristics believed to affect performance on DV
What are limitations of the repeated measures design?
-Order of effect
-Demand characteristics
What are limitations of independent groups design
-participant variables
-lots more participants to end up with same amount of data
What are the limitations of matched pairs design?
-very time consuming+difficult to match participants to key variables
-not possible to control all participants variables because some unknown
Method of dealing with limitations of repeated measures design
-counterbalancing (ABBA)
-cover story
Method of dealing with limitations of independent groups design
Randomly allocate
Method of dealing with limitations of matched pairs design
-conduct pilot study to see if variables matter
What are strengths of independent groups design
-no order effects
-demand characteristics less likely
What are strengths of repeated measured design
-no participant variables
-fewer participants needed
What are strengths of matched pairs design?
-No order effects
-Less demand characteristics
-Reduced participant variables
