Memory Flashcards
What is memory?
The process by which we retain informatin that we have experienced in the past
What are the 2 types of memory?
STM and LTM
What is STM
Memory for immediate events. Measured in seconds +mins and disappears if the info is not rehearst
What is LTM
memory for events that have happened in the past. Can last from 2 mins to 100 years
What is capacity?
A measure of how much can be held in memory
What is duration?
Measure of how long a memory lasts before it is no longer available
What is encoding?
Way in which info is changed so it can be stored
How does STM code?
codes acoustically
How does LTM code?
codes semantically
Describe capacity in the STM
7+-2 items
people can recall 5 words as well as letters
-idea of chunking things together
Describe capacity in LTM
potentially unlimited
Describe duration in STM
less than 18 secs
Describe duration in LTM
unlimited duration
What are weaknesses of STM and LTM
-Ecological validity
-Isn’t research testing LTM in detail
-Individual differences
