sampling Flashcards
What is opportunity sampling?
Opportunity sample is a technique that is most used by Psychology students when conducting experiments (typically at university during their undergraduate dissertation).
For example, asking people in the library to take part in your study at that moment in time.
What is a strength of opportunity sampling?
One strength of opportunity sampling is that it is quick to complete. This is a strength as opportunity sampling is convenient and less time consuming for the researcher.
What is a weakness of opportunity sampling?
One weakness of opportunity sampling is that it is not representative of the target population. This is a weakness as the results are less generalisable as the participants may all have shared characteristics.
What is stratified sampling?
Stratified sampling involves classifying the population into categories and then choosing a sample which consists of participants from each category in the same proportions as they are in the population.
For example, If the population is 60/40 men to women, then your sample for your study should be in that same proportion. This is the same for everything in the population, not just gender.
What is a strength of stratified sampling?
One strength of stratified sampling is that the results will be more representative of the wider target population. This is a strength as the results can be generalised to the target population.
What is a weakness of stratified sampling regarding time?
One weakness of stratified sampling is that it can be time consuming. This is a weakness as it takes a lot of time to calculate the specific numbers needed.
What is a weakness of stratified sampling regarding bias?
One weakness of stratified sampling is that certain groups may be overlooked in the sampling. This is a weakness as there may be bias in the sample, thus the results not generalisable.
