correlations Flashcards
describe the A01 for correlations
-correlations are when you are looking for a relationship between 2 variables
-they use quantitative data of at least ordinal
-can use secondary or primary data
-there are no IVs or DVs just co -variables
-three types of correlation-positive, negative, no correlation
-correlation coefficients describe the strength of the correlation and is a measure from -1(strong negative) to 1(strong positive)
what is a positive correlation
as one variable increases so does the other
what is a negative correlation
as one variable increases the other decreases
what are the strengths of using correlations
-they require little manipulation of behaviour so the data is already gathered making research quick/use existing data so quick easy
-can show unexpected correlation between two variables that was not previously thought of so new areas of research can be identified
-ethical as they can be used to research sensitive topics as no manipulation of variables is needed.
what are the weaknesses of correlations
-cant assume cause and effect as just because there is a relationship doesnt mean there isnt other influencing variables
-dont account for EVs so not valid
-lack of correlation does not mean there is no relationship, correlations fail to account for non-linear relationships
