Interviews Flashcards
describe interviews A01
-method of self-report
-non-experimental method as you dont need IV or DV
-can be given to a large amount of people which is a survey
-usually face to face
-3 types:structured, unstructured and semi structured
what is a structured interview
everyone has set questions in a set order.Questions cant be changed or expanded on
strengths of a structured interview
-highly standardised all ppts do the same questions in the same order=reliable
-all ppts do the same questions so results can easily be compared
-easy to conduct and dont require much training making them less time consuming
weaknesses of a structured interview
-cannot change questions to follow up on interesting points so results are less detailed and less valid
what is an unstructured interview
there is no real set questions just a general topic area to discuss , questions can be added and altered when needed
strength of an unstructured interview
-can follow up on interesting points this is a strength as participants will provide more detailed responses=valid
weaknesses of an unstructured interview
-ppts receive different questions therefore not standardised=not reliable
-not standardised also makes results harder to compare
-hard to conduct and require training which can be time consuming
what is a semi structured interview
some set questions but they can be followed up by adding questions if the ppt discusses something of interest
what are strengths of ALL interviews
-closed questions can provide quantitative data which is easy to analysed
-open questions can be used to gather rich qualitative data so results will be more valid
what are weaknesses of ALL interviews
- can be time consuming=harder to repeat
-use of open questions leads to qualitative data which is open to interpretation bias so results are subjective
-ppts may be influenced by social desirability so results may be less valid
