sampling Flashcards
what is random sampling
technique where every member of the target population has an equal chance of being chosen to take part in the study. This involves identifying everyone in the target population and using a random number generator to choose from the population
what are the strengths of random sampling
creates unbiased and representative sample of the target population so results are generalizable
what are the weaknesses of random sampling
difficult when the target population is large as everyone has to be identified this is a weaknesses as it is time consuming and is still not guaranteed to be representative
what’s volunteer sampling
sample consists of participants who volunteered to be part of a study when asked or responding to an advert
what are strengths of volunteer sampling
-convinent and no bias from researcher so less time consuming
-consent is provided when they volunteer so more ethical
what are the weaknesses of volunteer sampling
-some bias in where the researcher puts the advert
-only certain type of people volunteer so they may have shared characteristics like personality
